Summer Holiday Fun maths activities
Be inspired this Summer holiday to conjour up some special magic maths moments with your kids
Shhh - they won't even realise they're learning maths
How to make playing with sticks into a fantastic maths learning activity
How many sticks to make triangles and stars?
Our brains remember new facts when we make a connection to ones already learned. Help your child connect the six times table to the three times table.
★ Pass it on ★ Ask for example "How many sticks to make four triangles, how many sticks to make four stars?". Say for example "four lots of three is twelve, double twelve is twenty-four, that's four lots of six".
With this grid you can play lots of maths games - simply brilliant fun learning
Make a game grid using four strong sticks.
See what happens when you use ordinary knots or try these special ones:.
Find some pebbles and play noughts and crosses or invent your very own game to play!
How to make playing with pebbles into fantastic maths learning activities
Play Add to 5 grid game
Play around placing shells / pebbles in your grid. Can you make every row and every column have a total of five? .
★ Pass it on ★ Ask "Is there another way?"
Try playing the game with a different total - nine works well.
★ Pass it on ★ Ask for example "Can we make a different arrangement, still with totals of nine, by moving just one shell?".
Play Add to 15 place value grid game
Choose some large shells / pebbles to represent tens and small shells / pebbles as ones.
Play around placing pebbles in your grid.
Can you make every row and every column make a total of fifteen? .
★ Pass it on ★ Ask "Is there an easy way to swap pebbles around, make a different arrangement and still have totals of fifteen?"
How much maths learning can be included as you play Pooh Sticks?

Have lots of goes to find out "Does the shortest stick always win?" "Does the thinnest stick always win?"
★ Pass it on ★ Do some multiplication! Ask for example "How many sticks do we need for five more goes?"
★ Pass it on ★ Or do some division "How many more goes can we have with this pile of sticks?"

Play the Pebbles Guessing Game
Count twenty pebbles into a cup.
★ Pass it on ★ Ask for example "How many do you think we will need to fill the cup? Why?"
Count some more into the cup and both have another guess. You will be helping your child develop estimation skills.
★ Pass it on ★You will be doing lots of estimation in your day, talk to your child about it .
Play the Pebbles Subitising Game
Hide two, three or four pebbles under each cup.
☺ Take turns to lift a cup.
☺ Collect the set of pebbles if you are first to shout out the number.
☺ Race to collect the most pebbles!
When your child is confident include some pots of five.
Recent research has found that the skill of subitising (recognising how many without counting) is more important to a child's mathematical development than was previously thought. Find out more about subitising
Play the Number Pairs Game
Arrange some cups in rows and columns. Hide groups of the same number of pebbles under pairs of cups.
☺ Take turns to lift two cups.
☺If you find a pair, collect all the pebbles - otherwise put the cups back carefully where they were before and try to remember their position.
☺Race to collect the most pebbles!
Play the skittles place value Game
Collect some bottles or containers and count either one hundred or ten or one pebbles into each bottle.
☺ Take turns to throw a ball.
☺Score the total number of pebbles in the knocked over skittles
