Conjour up some special magic maths moments with conkers
to help your kids with all sorts of maths learning

How to make collecting conkers into a fantastic maths learning activity
How many conkers will fit into your jar?

one jar full of conkers, two other jars of different sizes for estimation activity

Help your child to get a feel for the number eight, the number twelve... and they will know that an answer e.g 12 - 8 = 8 cannot be right because it does not make sense. BRILLIANT ★ Pass it on ★ Ask "How many conkers do you think are in the jar?" Say for example "This jar looks a bit bigger so I think that we will be able to fit three more conkers into this one, three more than 12, I guess fifteen.

Play a conkers counting game with eyes closed!

seven conkers held in the palm of a hand

Help your chld develop an even stronger feel for number with this powerful eyes closed activity

☺ Take turns to close your eyes, grab a handful of conkers and 'count'.
★ Pass it on ★ On your turn talk about what you can feel. Say for example "I can feel three, four, five ,six, seven"

Sort your conkers in size order

conkers in a line smallest to biggest

Help your chld understand the language of size

☺ Share sorting your conkers into order depending on size.
★ Pass it on ★ Talk about other ways that you could order the conkers.

Turn an egg box into a ten frame and you have a powerful visual maths tool

5 conkers in a ten frame for visual maths activity

7 conkers in a ten frame for visual maths activity

17 conkers in a ten frame for visual maths activity

Play Tens Frame Tango

☺ Take turns.
☺ Player 1 secretly places their chosen number of conkers in the egg box ten frame, on a drawn or printed image of a tens frame or chooses a ten frame image.
☺ Player 1 allows player 2 to see the tens frame for a count of "one elephant, two elephants" (about 2 seconds)

☺ Player 2 says how many conkers they think there are.
★ Pass it on ★ When it is your turn to say how many talk about any patterns that helped you to work out the number.

Play Tens Frame Battleships

Along with your conker collection, you will need two egg box ten frames, one each, or two drawn or printed images of a tens frame.
☺ Take turns.
☺ Player 1 secretly arranges some conkers on the ten frame.
☺ Player 2 Tries to create a matching ten frame by asking questions that can be answered yes or no.
★ Pass it on ★ When it is your turn to ask say for example" Is the top row full? Are there 9 conkers?
☺ After a few goes you could introduce a scoring system, race to match with the fewest questions.

Play Sum Eye Spy

Grab a handful of conkers and gently throw them on the ground.
☺ Take turns to think of a sum that would match the set of conkers.
☺ When you run out of ideas grab another handful of conkers and throw again
★ Pass it on ★ On your turn talk about anything you notice that makes you think of that particular sum.
