8 top tips to help your child learn the five times tables

☺ Make counting forward and backwards in fives a fun activity for you to share with your child by turning it into a game.
☺ Take turns
☺ Player 1 says "five"
☺ Player 2 says "ten"
☺ Player 1 says "fifteen"... Have a laugh when it goes wrong.
☺ Play again starting at a different number.
☺ Agree on a 'magic' number e.g 25. Take turns to start the count forwards or backwards and if whoever comes to the magic number remembers to call out 'abracadabra' instead of the magic number they are declared the winner.

★ Pass it on ★ When your child consistently engineers themselves a winning position, no tests required, they will have gained a good understanding of the patterns of the five times table, Whooo!

☺ Use pebbles, dried beans or lego bricks and share lining up and counting e.g. three rows of five. Having this practical experience is just brilliantly helpful for every learner. In this case you also get to see a really special bit of maths magic.

★ Pass it on ★ Discovery is always more magical- more memorable so start by asking "what can you see when you look at our arrangement (array) from the side" After a good pause, if needed, you could follow with "I can see five rows of three". Talk about three lots of five being the same as five lots of three, 3x5=5x3 With this knowledge, which often gets missed, your child has less new facts to memorise.

☺ Use halving. This is particularly good if your child knows the 10x table. Use pebbles or a picture to secure a visual picture that 5x5 is half of 5x10, 7x5 is half of 7x10...

☺ Use doubles. If your child is unsure about one fact e.g 6x5 but, is confident that 3x5 is 15, Again an arrangement of pebbles or a picture will help your child see that 6x5 is double 3x5.

★ Pass it on ★ Developing this pattern say e.g. "If we know that 6x5 is 30 how can we figure out 12x5?"

☺ Use the addition pattern. Discover with the help of the leaflets photos. Talk about e.g 6x5 is the same as 5+5+5+5+5+5 AND 7x5 is the same as 5+5+5+5+5+5+5 so if you already remember 6x5 is 30 , 30 and 5 more will give you the answer to 7x5 WOW.

☺ Use the subtraction pattern. Discover with the help of leaflet photos.

★ Pass it on ★ Ask e.g." How many less is 9x5 than 10x5?"

☺ Get lots of practise with powerful visual images and importantly no time pressure to trigger maths anxiety using Tileys times tables online game
